G's Crafts n' Things: back bar single crochet
I love this stitch technique explained by G's Crafts n' Things: back bar single crochet.
I believe it can also be done with dc, just not sure.
It looks knitted and a lot like surface slip-stitch.

My father had been stationed in Italy back in the 1950's. He took a picture of a woman making something out of this technique and sent it to my mother since she was a knitter.

I think I'll try this sometime for a potholder maybe.
